Year Around School Year?

What would it be like for school to never end? This may become reality sooner or later because there are laws proposed in our own state government. They say in one of the articles they will be giving us more breaks during fall, winter and spring, but I personally don’t think kids need this. The population need to relieve stress with long vacations. Some adults do most of their work during the summer with kids. Without kids in the summer they won’t be able to get as much money. Kids also make their money during summer jobs, for example, college kids save up during the summer to help pay bills. At the end of the day year-round school makes all of us work more. Students should not have to attend school year-round. There are few traditions as weaved into the fabric of American youth as much as summer vacation. The origin of the 3-month leave of school goes back to the 1800s. Originally, it was based on the Agrarian calendar when children were needed as farm hands during harvest seasons. It is obvious that we live in a different era than the 1800s, most people see summer as a time to unravel from the school year and enjoy a little bit of leisure, but today this idea is fading. This generation is unique to those before it, because of the forces of globalization and technology academic competition is increasing at rates never before seen.…

School systems have always encountered trouble deciding whether or not to use a year-round education program. There have been studies on the effectiveness on this teaching schedule and most of the results are positive. Other investigations show that teachers themselves enjoy this schedule of learning since it allows them to interact with their students on a more continuous basis, and there is not a gap in curriculum due to summer break. However, students will still have time to rest and relax on the shorter breaks scattered throughout the year. One such study by Ballinger (1987) agrees that “students learn best by a continuous pattern of teaching, practice, reteaching, and more practice, until they finally grasp the concepts being taught”…

For parents, it is not practical. A benefit of year-round school is that the breaks are more evenly balanced over a twelve-month period instead of a nine-month period and one extra-long summer break. This is beneficial because parents can take vacation time in larger chunks and can use this time to travel or something else that requires more time. Parents should also be encouraged Because Opheim notes in an article that, “more frequent vacations contribute to better behavior (Gitlin, 1988; Loyal, 1991; Hoke, 1992). In a case study of Huntington Park High School, Jefferson County, California, Gitlin found that educators noticed immediate changes in the transition to a YRS [Year-Round School] program.…

No one wants to give up their summer break for anything, especially school. Children enjoy their summer, it is the time they can do whatever with no interruption, like run outside all day, swim, or hang out with friends. Many teenagers have summer responsibilities, bailing hay, for example, is an all-day activity and is easier to start in the morning so it is not too hot and teenagers cannot bail hay for their parents or some old man who needs help if they have to be at school. With no teenagers making hay, for old men who need help, who is going to do it? Summer is also a time for families to visit other family members out of state or go on family vacations together, they cannot go on vacation with school taking up that time.…

Middle school is a place where kids finally start to show who they’re going to be for a long time. It isn’t a place to be popular and look pretty. Skipping school for an entire year? Sounds too good to be true, but it is true. This phenomenon is called a gap year which defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is “a one-year hiatus from academic studies to allow for non-academic activities.” Many European countries are doing this method, where students take a year break after graduating high school but before college to give themselves time to do what they please without the anxiety and stress of academics. The Gap Year is a great solution for students to figure out exactly what they would like their future to be, and get an idea of the real world.…

The most significant part of learning, and the biggest source of motivation to work, is curiosity about the subject you are learning about. Consequently, summer opens students up to a much larger world than that of the classroom. It takes kids out of their textbooks and math worksheets and gives them a chance to try out the real world. It can even be said that “there are many skills students acquire during the summer at a faster rate than they acquire them during the school year”. The biggest threats to learning are a lack of curiosity and energy and, for the majority of students, the stress connected with the school year depletes both of those.…
