The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, nicknamed Obamacare, is President Barack Obama’s biggest legacy in the White House. Originally signed into law in 2010, it was created in order to provide more Americans with affordable health insurance, regulate the health industry, and improve the country’s quality of health care and health insurance. The Affordable care act attempted to help the over 44 million Americans without health insurance in the following ways. It expanded Medicaid in order to allow lower income families to be able to afford health insurance more easily. Millions of Americans will be paying for their own healthcare, while at the same time being forced to pay for someone else's health care. This is an expense many will struggle with. Furthermore, the Affordable Care Act will cause many small business to struggle, stifling job growth. Many small business owners, while facing increased taxes, will have to spend extra money on insurance for employees once they hit certain numbers. If an employer is that threshold and need more employees to grow their business, they may not be able to afford to pay that employee both a wage and the required health care. This will cause employers to stop hiring as much. Still, if a business owners need the employee they may just begin hiring people part time since then they would no longer be required to get that person health insurance. That person then gets neither health insurance or a full time job. Through all this, national unemployment will begin to rise due to people being unable to afford healthcare for a significant amount of employees. All these people without jobs will then be forced to go onto Federal Health insurance, further increasing taxes for those who can afford to pay them.
