In school all of my guidance counselors stress the importance of having public service hours when applying to colleges. Well what happens when every student coming into college has community service hours? Students that have a passion for aiding the community will no longer have the upper hand because their hours will be matched by kids that simply do not care about their service. Many students will either complete meaningless jobs such as sharpening pencils, and restocking books at a library, or have their hours forged. They believe that it would build character and teach them cherished life lessons. While that may be true, it is easier said than done. Mandating community service will be deceitful to students that already dedicate countless hours to their communities, have no incentive to put towards community service, and students that already have jobs play in sports or participate in extra-curricular activities.
