Well, it can take years of experimenting in the lab. A successful flavor of gum, or a new Doritos flavor can make millions of dollars for that company. Scientists have also discovered that texture of something can also make you love it, like buttery softness of a cookie, the delightful ooze of cheese on a pizza— is just as important as taste. The companies nearly know what we prefer like how much salt we want on you chips, and how many chocolate chips we want in our cookie. If it has the right flavor and texture we will not know when we are full, so we will just keep eating and eating.
Until the 1700s in Europe people would kill or fight each other for nutmeg, peppercorns, and even cloves because they were so valuably. Since these spices were so expensive handfuls of the people with them would soon become millionaires. Sometimes bloody battles were fought off the coast of Europe on a island where they grew. Humans have found many ways to make there food more appetizing, but it was not just the smells and flavors that certain spices were so expensive. By the end of the 1700s people started figuring out that they can grow their own
