Philip Malloy is being extremely disrespectful to his teacher and not respecting her authority over him. Miss Narwin: “Leave!” Pg 73 Avi. Miss Narwin is asking him to leave the room for creating a disturbance and Philip refuses to until he finally leaves. Philip Malloy: “It’s you who’s being disrespectful!” Pg 72 Avi. Philip is rebelling against the teacher and is disrespecting her authority over him. Philip Malloy doesn’t like Miss Narwin and could have been humming to annoy her and trying to escape her class. Philip states “Singing “The Star Spangled Banner”.” Pg 51 Avi.Philip says he is singing the national anthem but he was really humming it in class and says he was singing. Philip exclaims “Well, Iike to, you know, sing along. But, see, she kicked me out, for singing it.” Pg 102 Avi Philip is lying saying he was singing the national anthem when he was humming which is disrespectful so Miss Narwin would have won the case. Philip said “Just humming.” Pg 43 Avi. Philip even admits that he is just humming not singing. This is a huge difference in the story and shows Philip lied to his parents to make him seem like the victim and start this whole shenanigan.
