US Legal (2015) states that physical neglect is when a carer deprives a service user of their basic needs, this includes food, water and shelter. This is because if these needs are not fulfilled there it could cause serious illness or injury. Linda, M, PhD (1998) states that passive neglect is the unintentional deprivation of the service user’s physical, social and/or emotional needs. An example of this would be a carer forgetting to allow the service user social time with others due to a work overload. Cohen, E, PhD (2013) states that emotional neglect is the failure to provide emotional support depending on the type of relationship there is between to the two people. Emotional neglect is different to emotional abuse in a way that neglecting is done by omission rather than abusive actions. An example of emotional neglect could be show in case study 3 with the elderly resident needing more emotional support than what was given to him.
