While reading this article, many would say that this article lacks an emotional appeal and Orrenius and Zavodny would probably agree. Although the article lacks emotion, the article still successfully gets its main argument across. The article isn’t intended to appeal to emotion rather it’s meant to enlighten its audience of the problematic immigration policies and the apprehensions Americans have with immigration, while debunking some of the negative connotations associated with immigration. Immigration has always been a political situation talked about for years and even decades, but has become more debated since the 9/11 terrorist attack. The article also argued that immigration has also become the public’s main concern in recent years, due to the labor market and fiscal impact immigrants might have on the United States economy. Orrenius and Zavodny claim that the “federal government’s failure to enact a major change in immigration policy has resulted in an inefficient immigration system in dire need of overhaul and the time to act is now” (948 and …show more content…
The thesis statement discussed the volume and impact of unauthorized immigrants have on the United States economy. They state that at the state level, they are forced to take care of their own immigration problems because the federal government has continuously failed at enhancing border control and interior enforcement. Furthermore, at the state level, although the states have passed over 1600+ bills and resolutions, the states are not achieving their intended goals and are likely to result in harmful, unintended consequences which won’t alleviate natives’ concerns about immigration’s labor and fiscal impacts because they need the federal government’s help. After the thesis, the author’s, once again, split the subtopic into two smaller subtopics, Federal Level and State Level, to further discuss each point in detail and support their thesis statement. By doing this, they are able to provide their audience with an abundance of information showcasing their knowledge and increasing their credibility.
