Vietnam War, started at 1955, not just affected and brought most of people in sadness and sorrowful, but also a psychological impact. Some of the Soldier get Post-traumatic stress disorder --- war became their nightmare, they disturb thoughts, feelings, or dreams related to the horrible event in this war. (NIMH >>> Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) These kinds of impact was told in “How to Tell a True War Story” form the novel “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, the movie “Platoon” directed by Oliver Stone and the iconic war song “2+2=” by Bob Seger System. For example, on Pg.66 “Send guys to war, they come home talking dirty” (Tim O’ Brien). This quote clearly shows how war destroy people’s quality and their virtue. These young man, sent to the war, became anomic and come back home which became a dangerous or unsteady people in the country. They can’t not fit in this society. “Twenty years later… on lemon’s face” (O’Brien Pg. 80). This quote show how war destroy the life after war, that the dead of your friends or relative became your echoing nightmare. Obviously, these are kinds of symptom of PTSD, the psychological disease in war.
However, there are things that are unique in “How to Tell a True War Story” in “The things They Carried” Death is its unique theme. “A friend of his get killed…” (O’Brien Pg. 64) This clearly shows a friend’s death which death became normal in war. Paradox is other. “And in the end, of course, a true war story is never about war” (O’Brien Pg.81) This is a paradox that something is not something. In war there are no right or wrong. They are mad and desolation. One of the reason that soldiers burning village and boom the food is because they are impel by hate and anger of their condition and their dead friend. Soldiers rape girls is a sign of the desolation of soldier’s heart. They start to feel vacuous, and they just can use cruelty to fill.
The last selection, “2+2=”, use a unique approach to demonstrate how life and love destroy by the war. In stanza 2 the quote said “Now he’s buried in the mud over foreign jungle land” reveals how an average friendly guy dead which reveals that all of this kind of person cannot escape from this manmade fate. Another one is also in stanza number 2 “And he had himself a girlfriend and you made them say goodbye” This quote shows that love was destroyed by war. Not only lovers, but also relatives.
Never the less, the things that distinct and unique about 2+2 are the anger to the stupid rule and meaningless death. “It’s the rules not the soldier that I find the real enemy” (Stanza 3) clearly show how rule is stupid and harm people’s life that “author” hate it like a foe. “Well if he died to save your lies” (Stanza 2) This quote shows that people die because of life, which is meaningless and no value which enhance the hate to the rule and rule
