Given that “The Yellow Wallpaper” is narrated in first person it helps us understand the feelings and action of the protagonist that much better. Throughout the story the protagonist, Jane, goes through a breakdown, but because she is the one narrating it we understand why she is doing certain things. For example when she says: “But here I can creep smoothly on the floor and my shoulder just fits in that long smooch around the wall, so I cannot lose my way.” (Gilman, 77). If this moment had been described by anyone else than Jane herself none of the readers would have understood the reason behind this act of madness. Because the story is told in first person it makes it that much more interesting. If “The Yellow Wallpaper” would have been told by anyone else, it would have been pretty bland. For example: if the story would have been told by a third person omniscient narrator, like “The Story of an Hour”, the impact would not have been the same. Even if the story would have been told by John, her husband, or Jennie, her husband’s sister, it would not have had the same amazing effect it did when Jane is the one that tells it. Because Jane tells the story the reader gets a very unique insight into her life that no one has, except her. The lectors are provided with everything that Jane does, even her thoughts, because she tells the story herself. Especially in a story like “The Yellow Wallpaper” where Jane spends most of the time secluded from people and stuck thinking in her own head, it would be extremely hard for anyone else to be able to narrate
