Prep 9 Experience

I'm simply amazed, looking back at first semesters seeing how much I've grown as a student. If I were to look back almost a year ago, I realized applying for MCHS has been the best decision I've ever made. I strongly maintain that there's no doubt in my mind that MCHS is where I want to continue my high school education. Just being able to survive prep 9 seems like a great accomplishment. In this essay I will be discussing the following,my year as a prep 9 student, how prep 9 impacted me as a student, and how I fulfilled the expectations for prep 9. Let's begin a brief discussion on my year as a prep 9 student. My first day here as a prep 9 student was exciting, but after 2 to 3 weeks I was ready to have a mental breakdown. It was nowhere

High school is a staple of American culture. Popular culture is littered with high school imagery: cheerleaders at the homecoming game, senior prom, and finally, graduation. It is a major time of growth for adolescents and serves as a stepping stone into the adult world, giving students the skills and experiences needed to be successful later in life. However our perception of high school and the ‘high school experience’ is rapidly changing as alternatives to traditional schooling appear. An excellent example of this is an emerging program commonly referred to as ‘early college high school’, a duel enrollment program that allows high school students to receive an associate’s degree while earning their high school diploma.…

As a small, scrawny, confused 8th grade boy, the transition from a coed middle school - Roger Ludlowe Middle School - to Fairfield Prep was an enormous step for me socially and academically. At that time in my life, I was unsure if Fairfield Prep was going to be a good fit for me: all I had ever heard about the school were glowing reports from my older sister's friends who attended. Fortunately, looking back at it, attending Fairfield Prep was one of the most impactful and beneficial decisions I have ever made for myself as it inspired me to be "open to growth". This institution has not only pushed me academically, but it allowed me to stretch my comfort-zone and become more comfortable with myself.…

A messy bedroom, Arctic Monkeys as background music, and an adolescent begrudgingly writing an essay for their twelfth grade English class is the current scene. This is the perspective of a senior; an absolutely glamorous time in life. It's an alarming thought that my high school career has brought me to this point as I search my mind for the correct words to advise you and my fingers tap away at my small keyboard. I'm supposed to give advice and guidance to the future graduates of our beloved Quincy High School, but there's little I can give that can be completely relatable to all. For example, I was raised by a single father, am a part-time cashier, and can barely figure out how the Pythagorean theorem will actually affect my adult life.…

How I Used Public-School While reading the essay “I Just Want to be Average,” by Mike Rose, I noticed how his schooling experience was opposite of mine, there were similarities that lied within our home life, as well as coming from poverty and then making it in the end. During my time in high school, I had my own battles to fight every day, I was homeless, had a hard time finding the courage to make it through class and was stealing the bare necessities to make it week to week. I overcame this with sports, finding my own courage and believing in a school official who didn’t let me down. Eventually, I found my place in high school, despite how unpromising it looked for me in the beginning.…

The First to Succeed Not many people enter college knowing exactly what they want to do for a career or exactly what they want to major in, and if they do, they generally end up changing it. However, because of Blackfoot High School I consider myself one of the few. I know exactly what I want to major in and it is because of the classes and activities that I have been a part of that I am so prepared. BHS is responsible for who I am, who I’m going to become, and most importantly, BHS yearbook is responsible for the career that I have chosen to pursue.…

My tenth-grade experience summed up in one word would be “impactful”. It impacted me in a way that my previous school years could never compare to. The past few years in school involved compliments from teachers who believed I had the work ethic and the smarts to be put in an honor’s class. Only for them to never put me in an honor’s class. The phrase “you should be in the honor’s classes” rung repeatedly in my head to the point where it didn’t seem like a compliment anymore, it seemed like a constant jab at the fact that I wasn’t in the honor’s classes.…

Self-Worth Self-respect, self-confidence, self-regard, and self-love are all synonyms to self-worth. They all have to do with how a person distinguishes himself from others through introspection. How a person imagines their self-worth determines how they interact with others in society, how they hold them self and how they choose to see the world. This idea of self-worth is brought up in both James Baldwin “A Talk to Teachers” and Fredrick Douglas “Learning to Read and Write”. James Baldwin in his article “A Talk to Teachers” implies that self-worth is the same as self-love and self-confidence.…

They say high school is supposed to be some of the best times of your life, but for Mike Rose it is a completely different story. “I Just Wanna Be Average” is an essay written by Mike Rose about how his score and another student’s score were mixed up and Mike was sent to a vocational school. After being at a vocational school, he changed for the worst as a student until the error was found, and he was sent to college prep classes where Jack MacFarland changed him back to a caring student. There are major contrasts between my high school experience and Mike Rose’s experience.…

High school is a lot like an epic novel. We are each the hero of our story, and during that story we face challenges that make us consider who we want to be. I have worked very hard to write a 4 year journey into a two page essay. Through the journey of high school my interests, activities, work, personal circumstances, reasons for attending college, and future aspirations have been the core elements to my personal novel. I hope that through the Hagan scholarship I will be able to add the chapters about college without the never ending battle against student loans.…

In my English 111 class I was asked to write a comparison and contrast paper, and only one topic could come to mind. Comparing my normal high school (Northwest) to my school of choice (Roanoke Valley Early College). It’s so hard to believe that if I wouldn’t have gotten accepted to RVEC I would’ve been continuing at Northwest Halifax.…

I am in eighth grade. It is a sunny, warm Sunday in early fall at the St. Peter's Prep Open House. Four years ago, I made the decision to attend St. Peter’s Prep, a school that is approximately 45 miles away from my house.…
