The Missouri Institute of Mental Health reported that drug induced deaths are increasing each year. Alarming statistics like this are allow for eye-opening advertisements like “All American Girl.” Heroin is an active killer, and drug use should be destigmatized. The ad was extremely confrontational, which was the purpose--drug abuse is a unforgiving disease that…
In addition, the advertisement states “doctor” more than once to make it more creditable. The use of the word “doctor” makes the advertisement meaningful and engaging to the audience because it emphasizes the role of a healthcare expert wanting to improve the health of the community. Since the advertisement is coming from a health organization the audience is most likely going to take the issue seriously. The advertiser uses pathos appeals through the use an image that allow the audience to over think if they are doing the right thing when taking medications. The advertisement effectively communicates to the audience through their emotion and their conscience to do the right thing for their health and their love ones.…
Lien sheds light on the upper hand of pharmaceutical companies over consumers as nearly every medication on the market today comes with a winding list of side effects, yet consumers lack the ability to speak out against the FDA’s loose guidelines. Pharmaceutical companies, however, may argue that creating drugs with stricter guidelines would incur higher expenses and is likely to lead to financial loss. It would be more challenging to create those medications without side effects, which could ultimately affect the consumer, as innovations in medication would be slower. Lien’s use of logos through the powerful incorporation of rhetorical questions as well as concrete statistics and pathos through capitalizing on fear, combined with her ethos…
It is weird to think that someone could be watching the nine o’clock news with a commercial break that includes ads for Green Giant canned corn, new pills that claim to shed fat, and a sale happening right now at Kohls. What is weird about that normal situation is that the person pays no mind to the suspicious drug ad allowed to be sandwiched into the broadcast by a major television station. This weird thing is shockingly normal to Americans. Modern culture is so accustomed to pharmaceutical ads that no one notices how prevalent yet scary they are.…
A well-educated and informed public about health care and its treatments is without a doubt the reason why DTCA of prescription drugs was originally brought about, and why it continues to be legal today. If advertisements were funded by sources outside of pharmaceutical companies whose main goal is to get people to buy their product, then that would be a possibility. With some allergy medications, pain relievers, and cold medicines that are available for purchase on any store shelf, it does make sense to advertise. People need to have the ability to diagnose and treat minor ailments and ills. The medications do not have dire consequences and have been thoroughly tested, and advertisements for them serve a purpose in allowing the public to treat…
Morgan (2003) found: “Pharmaceutical companies are required to use the same active ingredients in generic drugs as the brand name version, and generic prescriptions must meet the same quality and safety standards” (pg. 9). Pharmaceutical policies in Canada should focus on substitution laws and cost-effectiveness to make Canada a healthier place. According to Khosla et al., “Direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA) promote its prescription products directly to patients. Patient Medication Adherence and health outcomes in patients” (pg. 483). Universal prescription drug coverage in Canada should provide necessary services without direct charges to the patient.…
Morbidity and mortality rates associated with prescription drugs are a vital public health matter, but the prices inflicted on the US economy are also significant. “A 2011 study estimated that,…
Conclusion Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, the total prescriptions per year in United States have increased rapidly, and the study done above confirms that these increasing prescribing rates are causing significant damage to the country’s health. As the number of prescriptions increase, the amount of prescription harm recorded not only follows but increases at a significantly higher rate. This disproves my original hypothesis and indicates that the prescription process is currently flawed, and this flaw primarily originates within the drug monitoring systems. Improving Prescription Drug Monitoring As explained by Dr. William Yang, the increasing prescription rates alone should not be alarming as they can be attributed to the advancements in diagnostic technology, but the current drug monitoring systems are incapable of managing the superior number of prescriptions. As highlighted by the recent efforts of INSPECT, the drug harm trends can be reversed by improving prescription drug protocols.…
Obama proposed a bill that would dedicate 1.1 billion dollars to exterminate the pharmaceutical problem (morning). That is only a fraction of the money spent to fight all the other drugs like heroin, meth, cocaine, etc., therefore the problem is so prevalent. There is an unfathomable amount of people prescribed painkillers within the United States. Thirty-eight percent of the American population use prescription painkillers, meanwhile only thirty-one percent are in use of tobacco products. Opioid painkillers killed around 19,000 people in 2014, that is a greater number of murders committed that year (washingtonpost).…
The American Medical Association (AMA) is fighting for DTC advertising to be banned. AMA states concerns people ask for drugs that are unnecessary and cost of prescription drugs is rising. According to AMA, there is “a 30% increase in money spent on ads in the past two years, which now totals $4.5 billion” (the fix, 2015). The opposing view from the pharmaceutical companies is that DTC advertising helps inform people to know what to talk to their doctor about for their health and treatment.…
Americans use more prescription drugs than any other developed country. Prescription drugs only represent 12 percent of total health care costs in the United States, but the rising prices of those drugs is an issue that keeps reoccurring not only for patients, but for prescribers, payers, and policy makers. There are people that believe that the rise in price of these drugs is appropriate, but if they keep on rising in price, the United States will start suffering not only financially but medically. Despite a lot of other aspects of the economy rising in price, pharmaceutical drugs should be lowered, or should at least be kept at a reasonable rate. The rise in prices of prescription drugs is an issue that does not seem to be going away…
Prescription drug abuse is an increasing problem that is rising at a very high rate and can lead to deadly consequences; between 2000-2014 half a million Americans died from drug overdoses (CDC, 2016). This proposal should be acted upon because it is not to drastic of a step and it will not eliminate prescription drug abuse, but it will instead cause a decrease of abuse from the people who obtain legal prescriptions. If this proposal is not put into place or no action is taken within the doctors' offices, prescription drug abuse will more than likely continue to increase at an alarming rate because the access of these drugs will still largely be through physicians. It is only from a path of action through doctors that will cause the greatest reduction in prescription drug abuse and overdoses. People do not have to give up much for this proposal, which is why it would be so beneficial in handling prescription drug abuse in the United…
It is because while they spend hundreds of millions of dollars on TV time, they get back billons of people buying those things because they are sick.” Meaning that through the media these drug companies have manage to give solution to many peoples how need results. Likewise, David Wolfe states, “We have been thought to be consumers. We have been taught to spend money on cars, houses, clothing…etc., but not on our health.” A major reason that our society has taught us to buy valuable objects is because it is great for our economy.…
Each year medically prescribed drugs are responsible for more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined, a report by CDC found that each year over 15,000 Americans die by overdosing on prescription drugs. “Prescription overdoses are an epidemic in the U.S.” Dr. Thomas Friedan, director of the CDC. “Most people who die from prescription drug overdose are taking someone else’s medicines”, he says. According to the National Institute on drug abuse, an estimated of 48 million people (aged 12 and older) have used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons in their lifetimes. People in favor of prescribed drugs usage believe these substances are less harmful than street drugs because they are prescribed by a professional.…
Drug use in American culture has a profound presence. It can be found in TV shows, music, and some drugs even have advertisements. Alcabes’ article Medication Nation even acknowledges advertisements as being a part of the problem of over medication. I believe that excessive drug usage is a now a popular thing and has been caused by the American culture. Watching television shows is a popular thing to do in American culture but some of the shows that we are watching in our down time are depicting the usage of drugs and even glorifying it.…
