Most of the puppies are found with bleeding or swollen paws. According to an article on puppy mills: dogs abused for the pet trade a Pennsylvania breeder confessed that he kept his dogs in cages because it was “the only way to keep a lot of dogs.”The cages at the mills have minimum shelter from extreme weather conditions. Breeders force the female dogs to mate every time they are in heat abusing the limit of pups they can produce. Usually they are forced to breed when they are about 8-9 months of age with little time to recover between litters. Also, when the dogs can produce anymore, and the reproduction rate declines they are abandoned or put to sleep to make room for new dogs. Breeding dogs in puppy mills often suffer from injuries and disease that go untreated. Mothers and their litters regularly suffer from the lack of adequate veterinary care. The most awful difficulty a dog at a mill can face is a dental disease. According to a report of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA) on puppy mills show that a dental disease can cause infection, pain, and in most severe cases the loss of the mandible and maxilla. In addition, worm infections, lesions on eyes, and skin diseases are common disorders that are often untreated in this puppy mills. Puppies that are shipped from the mill to the pet store travel many miles, exposing themselves to many diseases due to the lack of shelter, and ventilation.
