Pursuing A Career: Personal Statement

At this point in my life, I am uncertain of the career I would like to pursue. I am currently enrolled as First Year Life Science student with an intention of a major in biology. Like many students, I am uncertain if this is the major that I wish to graduate with. I find myself considering switching majors increasingly often: psychology, the Bachelor of Arts in Sciences (with an interdiscplinary focus in either psychology or sociology), and law are the other academic paths that that have interested me. Though I am interested in the biological sciences, I believe that I am much more interested in understanding the ethical standards and real life circumstances that permeate the medical industry - as well as how these things affect society and the individual. I am interested in understanding how socioeconomic status contributes to mental illness. Conversations with my friends and peers have made me realize that phenomena such as bias, personal experiences, and limitations in perspective (that is to say, how an individual may not be able to understand the depth or significance of another one's thoughts or feelings on account of their lack of similar experience) affect how readily an individual receives and interprets information. I wish to understand the phenomenon that contribute to willful ignorance and miscommunication between individuals, the public, and academia. I am interested in understanding what truths and types of information are considered - or should be considered - relevant to leading a meaningful life. To this end, I wonder if I would like to become a teacher so that I may have the opportunity to pass on knowledge, mold impressionable minds, correct the mishaps that I feel prevade education, and contribute to a more deep thinking, receptive
