Rainsford is a man of logic and reason. His clever actions and resourcefulness while Zaroff’s guest on Ship-Trap island prove my argument. Rainsford is a hunter and a rather talented and well known one to say the least. He has outsmarted his prey time and time again, and he has separated himself from most mediocre hunters that are competing with him for recognition. Furthermore, Whitney tells Rainsford that he’s seen him hit a moose in the dark four-hundred yards away.…

In “The Sniper”, he was shot in the arm, with the bullet piercing one of his bones. The author states “Then he lay still against the parapet, and, closing his eyes, he made an effort of will to overcome the pain” (O’Flaherty 3). This shows that even in a situation where he got shot and is in extreme pain, he tries to stay calm and power through the pain that he is going through. Without this kind of bravery he may of just given up and accepted defeat. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford was able to last the 3 days without getting caught.…

Theme Transcending Literature Rainsford had two options: jump off the cliff into the jagged crags or stay and get eaten by the savage dogs chasing him to his demise. The author, Richard Connell, expresses how hard-work and determination beats all odds. He didn’t want to take part in the hunt, but he knew he had to do whatever it took to defeat Zaroff because he didn’t want to die such a shameful death, but more importantly, beat Zaroff at his own game. Trying to maintain his civility, Rainsford had to play Zaroff’s game in order to survive. This conflict between man versus man was very tense. His situation goes from being able to produce a “roaring fire” to trying to “kill the dog and bury his hands in the warm body until feeling returned to them. Then he could build another fire”. Even though he seems to be ludicrous, the man shows immense determination, even when he realizes he is going to die he is humbled. As for The Most Dangerous Game Rainsford is in completely different situation, but when he first falls off the yacht, he’s pertinacious about getting to safety.…
