“The hallmark of that period was the Ranch house. It is said to have been invented in 1932 by Cliff May, a self-taught San Diego architect” (Rybczynski). The Ranch House started to become more popular after World War 2 and could be seen spreading across the United States for its appeal. “The Ranch House can be considered a subtype of modern-style architecture, which embraces open spaces and the connection between indoor and outdoor living” (Beuerlein). The Ranch house helps build that connection because of the open space it provides. The inside of the house has less interior walls which opens up the rooms. Often the living and dining room will be opened up which builds the connection between family and guests. The Ranch house also allows more diversity in ornamentation, which gives more options to the type of siding and windows put onto the house. “Ranch style homes can have just about any style of siding. Windows range from large, plate-glass picture windows, to sectioned colonial-style windows” (Essley). Having the open windows helps build the connection to the outside of the house into the yard. The whole design of the open rooms and connection between the inside and outside of the house reduces the cost dramatically because of the lack of interior walls. Having more interior walls in the house will increase the cost as it is being built, and it closes off the rooms to each other. The open style floor plan limits the amount of interior walls so there is less building materials which makes the house more cost effective
