In order to be considered successful in adopting a rational-emotive approach a health care providers must make sure that they stay “grounded” individuals. This is achieved in four steps: “monitoring one’s emotional reactions, identifying common factors of emotional events, dismissing negative/irrational thoughts and finally filling oneself with helpful views/logic.” (185) One needs to keep their head clear of self-doubt but at the same time unclogged of prejudgement and egotism of one’s “superior knowledge.” And while physicians are able to treat the visible physical maladies, not being able to recognize any underlying emotional/mental issues that are plaguing patients only continues the “cycle of pain.” The treatment prescribed may be right, but not taking into account how a patient may feel may just render the whole thing obsolete. One cannot forget how much of a “leap of fate” this whole patient-physician relationship is, especially when it involves one member exposing all their inner thoughts and insecurities. To essentially bare one’s “soul” in this day and age is a risky process with so much negativity and judgement flying around both in real life and online. If you think that your day is difficult because of some “unruly” patient just think about how hard that patient’s day must be as well. You may be having a hard time but at least you are in good health and are it is your job to be in a hospital. Your patient, on the other hand, is sick and taking time to go to the doctor 's’ office is taking away from from their work productivity time. Doctors have to be able to recognize such internal strife and take that into account when prescribing a treatment. They must strive to be pillars of support that patients can rely on, to be able to trust with their health. This trust can only be achieved by making sure that you take into account all the factors that may be affecting a patient in order to offer the best and most rational advice. In a best case scenario doctors really do have all the answers, however that is only if they are able to recognize the problems a patients have
