If someone I knew was exhibiting signs symptoms or depression, I would help them the same way I would help myself. Self esteem can be raised by counteracting negative thoughts. I would try to boost self esteem with positive comments, encouraging enjoyable activities and by doing something to make the person feel good about who they are. I would find a way to help confront, rather than avoid the problem because ignoring a problem does nothing but make it worse. We all have to deal with things sooner or later. Expressing feelings or thoughts in a journal is a good emotional release for people who may not be willing or able to talk to somebody else about whats bothering them, and it’s a good way to rationalize and decide on a way to fix the issue. I would encourage the person to share their concerns and compare notes with people who have similar problems. Sometimes hearing what is bothering somebody else and how they are coping can be helpful in finding a solution for our own
