The Political War
The so-called "Red Scare" refers to the fear of communism in the USA during the 1920s. “It is said that there were over 150,000 anarchists or communists in USA in 1920 alone and this represented only 0.1% of the overall population of the USA.” (history learning center - source 8) It is surprising looking back and seeing how the percent is so small that they scared the population so much. Red Scare was a term applied during the 1920s to a period of extreme anti-communism in the United States from 1917 until 1920”(source 3). “Nicola Sacco was born in the Italian town of Torremaggiore on 22nd April, 1891. He emigrated to the United States when he was seventeen. Sacco found work in a shoe factory in Stoughton, Massachusetts. He got married and started a family. Sacco also became involved in left-wing politics ”(source 6) This was very common for lots of immigrants in the 1920s. They would come over and work in a factory . “Bartolomeo Vanzetti was born in the Italian town of Villafalletto on 11th June, 1888. The son of a farmer, Vanzetti emigrated to the United States when he was twenty years old. Vanzetti settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where he worked as a fish peddler. Vanzetti was shocked by the way working class immigrants were treated in America and became involved in left-wing politics.” (source 6) This was also a classic case of coming to America getting an industrial job. The job was cheap and had many immigrants working for the factory companies. Sacco and Vanzetti had very strong left wing radical beliefs. Now when the average person thinks of a communist as a scary russian but realistically they are regular people, people you would see on the street or sitting next to you at the movies. That being said some are more extreme than others. The pay was ok and had a steady income. Work as an immigrant was common among most immigrants, go to america, work in factorie, stay there for twenty years, die from related causes. Two men had been killed while carrying two boxes containing the payroll of a shoe factory. After the two men were shot, the two robbers took the $15,000 in cash. Eyewitnesses say that they were seen getting into a car with several other men. People from the crime scene that saw the men thought they looked Italian.. On 5th May, 1920, Sacco and Vanzetti were arrested and interviewed about the murders of Frederick Parmenter and Alessandro Berardelli, in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Sacco and Vanzetti were later arrested and put on
