People might need time to gradually adjust when they first arrive to another country. Some people may need to recover from the jet lag and insomnia. According to Littlejohn (as cited in Smith, 2008), “It is a known and documented phenomenon that virtually everybody who crosses from one culture to another experiences to some degree” (p. 41). For example, when I first came to Canada, I had insomnia because of differences in time. It gets darker earlier outside during the winter season than Korea. People slowly begin to feel normal again and become more comfortable in their environment. There are lots of challenges and uncertainties; therefore, it is not unusual to feel tired and confused. In addition, people may take time to adjust to the different climate, food and physical conditions. For instance, some people find it difficult to locate vegetables and sauces they usually eat in their native country because of different food and life style. People might find that usual ways of dealing with challenges are less effective. When they go to an unfamiliar country by themselves it may be difficult to find resources to help with challenges. People should practice greeting that they meet on the street in a friendly way. For example, Canadians casually greet almost every one when they meet, but newcomers might feel confusing about this way of greeting. Greetings are different depending on the country. For instance, many Canadians have a tattoo or piercing on their body. Having tattoos in Korea, means gangsters or famous actors. The unfamiliar behavior of people can seem strange to newcomers.
