My Portfolio Reflection

Improved Essays
My portfolio illustrates how I have gradually evolved from a high school level of writing skills to a beginner level of college writing. In the beginning when I started this writing class I was totally confused how to reach a college level of writing skills and practices. Then I slowly started to learn the correct way to setup an efficient personal writing method that I felt comfortable using but did not overwhelm myself with the amount of work at once. To forge this personal writing process, I had to learn the correct way to organize an essay, write a well developed thesis, cite scholarly sources I used, and use appropriate evidence from them. With this process it also taught me how to write with efficient speed and accuracy.

I used my analysis skills in my works by doing thorough research on specific topics needed to support my papers and analyzing them carefully to find the information needed. I evaluate my works extensively when writing them to ensure I have well developed ideas and to correct any unseen mistakes. In my works, I use synthesis by reading multiple sources and connecting them to convey my point.
To attain the course objective of critical thinking, I used the practices of analysis and evaluation. I used the skill of critical thinking in my essay writing by bringing in examples from outside sources like “Ashputtle” and then analyzing them with my subject matter of the essay like “Walt Disney’s Cinderella” before making a statement. I used evaluation skills in critical thinking by comparing my subject matter of the

My strengths include hold on the subject, organization, and vocabulary. I have a strong hold on subject which basically means I research a lot of background information to write my essays backed by credible sources. This can be observed in “At the Whim of Authority” in the quote, “This can be supported by the Stanford Prison Experiment conducted by Dr. Phillip G. Zimbardo. In the experiment he had volunteers and split them into two groups which consisted of guards and prisoners. The prisoners were left under the control of the guards without any supervision. Within hours the guards started abusing the prisoners without any orders from any kind of authority” (4). Where I explain the details on the Zimbardo Experiment with good background knowledge. I organize my essays in a way that is appropriate and engaging to the reader. This can be noticed in “The Hudsucker Homeric Hero of Modern Day” where I organized the whole essay in a compare and contrast format, explaining background information. By organizing the essay in this format, it ensures that the reader is informed about background information beforehand and can be able to compare the similar elements. To make my essays interesting I vary my vocabulary. This is most prominently observed in “You Shall Not Pass Banished Words” in the phrase, “The reason women believed these words are

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

This semester I have learned a great deal from Professor Beach, especially in regards to argumentative essays. He has taught how to get the proper evidence, facts, and to stay on point and remain focused. But most importantly he has taught me that argumentative essays must have a valid argument. Before I took Professor Beach’s course, when I saw commercials, advertisements, or the news, I would believe them without doing the proper research. Beach has taught me to see whether or not people are actually telling the truth or using fallacies.…

It has been nine years since I have attended college and eleven since I have taken an English course. The first English Composition class I took in 2004, was very dry, and the expectations from what I remember were extremely low. We read excerpts, wrote reflection papers, and that pretty much sums it up. When I reviewed the classes needed for my current degree of interests, I immediately convinced myself English Composition would be the easiest way for me to ease myself back into college. My expectations were low only because of what I experienced before, and I felt this was the place to start in order to help bring my confidence up about returning to college.…

Example of critical thinking used in the Mary Barnett writing: “I would vote not guilty based off personal bias from Caroline’s information”. Without critical thinking, I could not have thrown her testimony out because I would not have known it was severely bias. After accumulating a multitude of source I find myself only taking very limited information from them. Although all the sources I find are solid, I also often times find myself using the same information from each source. With this my papers sometimes become repetitive and make it harder to read. For this portfolio, I have chosen three papers that I believe depict both my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, how I’ve grown as a writer, and how I still have an immense gap for development in my writing as it is early in my writing career in college.…
