Reflection On The Deaf Nation Expo In Alameda

My friends and I went to the Deaf Nation Expo in Alameda County Fair Pleasanton, last October 10, Saturday. We lined up as the members are preparing to let us all in. I was surprised when a young teenager approached me and signed "asking where I got my print outs?" I did not answer right away for I was caught off guard. It feels like I was being test on, like it is an exam, I feel very nervous and shy, but in the end the girl was patience enough to repeat her sign until I understood it. I answered, signing I printed it out from home. It was not a perfect sign. I pointed out the paper print outs and sign print home. It actually feels good that I was somehow able to help her out and I feel good about knowing how to sign alphabets.

I talked to this one guy who sells a telephone with a built in screen so a person can see the other person on the other line signing. It is made especially for Deaf people he said but hearing people can also use it. The seller told me his name but I forgot already I think his name is Dan. He said he used to hear better and that he is now hard of hearing. Dan can still speak with words but as not clear as how hearing people speak. I admire Deaf and Hard of hearing people I have met so far. They are very inspiring, their spirit and willingness to live a normal life is absolutely very motivating to me. There is a bunch of language barrier for people, but I've never thought of Deaf community as one of them and I know a lot of people who doesn't pay attention or doesn't even know about Deaf community. I really think that people should at least learn about Deaf community and some of their important signs. The outside world know there are Deaf people but just doesn't know much about them and they are part of the world too. I'm glad I took this class because one day I will be a nurse and I can be of help of someone in the Deaf community and if I get really good at it I can be their voice as

From my own perspective, I have never seemed so displaced in my mind about this topic. Right from the beginning, I was challenged with the first of many problems the deaf community faces on a regular basis. While at school, Max would miss the morning announcements. There rarely was any visual aids or handouts that summarized the morning’s important announcements. It was worse, even in this case, that Max could not lip-read any one person either.…

Picture your favorite movie or song do you know what that director or artist is trying to get across to the audience? Movies, television, shows, plays, music, and art are all an exhibit of entertainment of some sort. All these things have a meaning that they want to convey you. In deaf culture this is no different, the teller of these stories, or movies, or means of entertainment is conveying some sort of message to the audience. Marlee Matlin a famous deaf actress is a teller not only to the deaf community, but to hearing as well.…

The book our class was given to read is called “Train Go Sorry: Inside a Deaf World” by Leah Hager Cohen. The writing is about what she had seen living in a Deaf school since a child, and what struggles the Deaf community has. She lived in Lexington School for the Deaf, which she always felt at home, comfortable, and knew the lay of the land. She considered Lexington to be her “red-bricked castle, her seven acre kingdom.” This is where she lived with her brother Max, and her mother and father.…

Before reading this article, I had little-to-no background knowledge on deafness. This article expanded my knowledge and made me do research so I could better understand deafness. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article because of the insight it provided. I think that this showed be a more widely discussed topics so that people are more knowledgeable about being deaf. I think that people would be more aware of deafness if it was actually talked about and not just kind of brushed under the rug.…

“With the first establishment of the first public school for the deaf” in France during the 1760s, Thomas H. Gallaudet transported sign language to America (Supalla, Clark, 2015.) The sign language that Gallaudet transported was within a person named Laurent Clerc. Clerc, like Gallaudet, had the goal to open a school in the United States; and so “The American Asylum for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb -now named American School for the Deaf (ASD), was established in Hartford Connecticut in 1817 (Czech 1830; Eriksson 1993.)”…

Similarly, deaf culture been part of the society, it thus has a way of shaping individuals found within the same society. In that case, joining a deaf culture and been intermingled in their way of life would be something I would oblige to do. This step would be out in the quest of first learning sign language, which would be a direct ticket towards association with deaf individuals within their culture. At one point, I happen to mingle with deaf students during my senior high school time.…

I have seen some deaf people think that other people are talking about them and them beening deaf. On page 94 “ There is no deaf heroes. There is no ASL ( pg94, Lane).” I went looking and there really isn't anything for deaf heroes and there wasn't anything about deaf or ASL. I believes that we should have at least someone to look up to and it doesn't have to be a superheroe or someone in comic books, it can be a parent or anyone in the community.…

Throughout my life, I have really taken for granted my ability to hear. I honestly never notice how good I have it until I watched this video and made Deaf friends. For my first Deaf event of my ASL 2 year I went to Halloween Special at Thompson Hall. On the drive there I was pretty nervous because I am not a fan of haunted houses and scary stuff like that, but I was also nervous to just be at the event, even though I had already attended one event last year I was still not completely comfortable with my signing. The only reason for that is that i know that I do not know all the signs that they would be using but I know that I would figure it out using context clues and asking questions. Walking up to the event was a little confusing, only for the reason that we went to what we thought was the front door…
