1. Organization/Planning
I must say that one of my strengths is organization and planning for the classroom. One of my biggest fears is to walk in a room blind and make an absolute fool of myself in front of twenty or more students During practicum, I spent days planning a lesson and giving myself additional background information that I could on the topic of my lesson. I tended to plan my lessons with the use of multiple outside resources. That was clear when I planned my lesson on witchcraft and women in Mrs. Skarsgards class. I not only used the textbook, but primary sources I had of my own, as well as internet resources to not limit myself or the students on the topic. There were many times that I watched because of weather or other events happening at the school that my practicum teachers had to modify what they were doing because of things that were well beyond their control. There is lots of curveballs thrown at teachers and I myself got to experience that at both my practicum placements. The first time I took the lead in Mrs. Strands class was when she was gone. Still fairly new to the classroom, I was given the opportunity to take the reins with only a substitute or paraprofessional there to help if needed. I threw together a lesson and taught her first five class periods as best as I could. Then in the case of Mrs. Skarsguards classroom, I had rescheduled my lesson multiple times due to weather. Every time that I would ask the class a question, it was a simple yes or no response. This was no help to me when I wanted in class discussion to be at the center of the lesson. Working on open ended questions will allow me to gage student critical thinking skills, as well as promote an active classroom discussion. Much of what is taught in history or any other the other social sciences require critical thought, and the best way to promote it is through open ended questions. Therefore, it is essential that I improve this
