Math In High School

Superior Essays
Math has always been my least favorite subject in school. If I had to sum up how I felt about math in one word it would be “ugh,” because having to take math again after completing four years of it in high school was enough. It is not that math is too complicated for myself but I have very little interest in expanding my knowledge beyond the basics (what I have already obtained). It wasn’t until last semester that I became aware of the usefulness of math I wasn’t aware of how it could intertwine as well as benefit a person’s major or career, up until that point I felt as though math should have always been optional like an alternative elective. During the time of my statistics course I became knowledgeable of how math is able to be expended …show more content…
To put it frank it was a good feeling and amusing when I passed math every year in high school because I really didn’t pay too much attention or even focus as much as I should have at certain times, since I wanted to be stubborn and ignorant. There were times where I would just decide I didn’t want to learn the lessons because they were either being taught difficultly, lack of total interest and or it didn’t seem to be useful in my life for what I planned on doing. Looking back now I can admit I was wrong for having that kind of mind set which I will be going more into depth in another paragraph about the usefulness of math. It was also during that time that I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses. For instance, one of my biggest weaknesses is my comprehension but thanks to tutoring and hard work I was able to improve myself to the point where I know what needs to be done to make sure I completely understand the problem and what it is asking. Just to clarify again math was not problematical but that there were a lot of issues within the teaching but more so on my part where I was lacking interest in expanding my knowledge beyond where I was at, you could say I was too …show more content…
Learning about ancient mathematics teachings that stretch back as far as the Stone Age and how the evolution of mathematics has transpired to its current modern state. Without understanding the development of mathematical thought, it can come off challenging to value modern mathematics in the modern-day and highly specialized state. Even with that being said I promised myself that I’d be more receptive and attentive in this course and in all my other courses so no matter what I’m going to stick to that by advancing both my strengths and weaknesses. At first, I wasn’t going to take math until the last semester of my senior year but so far, I’m glad that I didn’t because the math we’ve been working on has really expanded my knowledge more than I expected and allowed me to refresh myself on some of the old problems I learned and worked on in high school. This leaves me with both curiosity and uncertainty of what to expect for the rest of the upcoming semester because it can go both ways moving forward which can be a little threatening but I feel that I am ready for

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

Math has always come fairly easily to me, starting when I took Algebra 1 as a seventh grader. I’ve excelled many years, even going into my school’s math and science program where the students are given honors math and science classes from ninth grade through twelfth grade. I’ve always been a step ahead in math so that is how I was able to enroll in calculus last year. Everyone else in my class was going to take BC Calculus so I thought I should too, I could handle it if they could.…

As a teacher, my belief is that students be taught the importance of mathematics in the daily life. I also stand firm that students should also be taught important life lessons that relate to how to succeed and prepare for the future. I think that it is inevitable that students be taught basic curriculum in mathematics. I agree that concepts of Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics be taught but I also think that students should be taught mathematics that deals with finances earlier then the college level. Everyone I let know says I am crazy for going into Math education.…
