saw it in their eyes. Expectation. All of my other teammates had warned me of the threats I would receive from the eyes of our audience, but I have never been one to see them as terrorizing. Ever since I was little, standing in front of an audience, the stares I would receive have never held me back. Unlike others, I feel empowered when I am being stared at. I feel a sense of encouragement when those expectant eyes interminably glare up at me. As a result, I have never been afraid to take the platform and stand up in front of judging eyes; it is what I'm passionate about. However, when I immigrated to the U.S. with no English in 2011 and faced the language barrier in front of me, I limited myself from my passion and many opportunities of involvement. Even though I solved the problem of getting bullying in middle school because of my ethnic was different, still, there was something like a 200 pounds rock on my heart that made me afraid of talking in front of judging eyes. I wanted to be an active girl again who loved communicating with people, who loved being in my community, and who loved presenting first to …show more content…
I didn't want my lack of English level to be the reason and excuse for a lack of skills. Moreover, through the two hour practice of debating in front of 24 judging eyes every Friday, it helped me build up my confidence substantially. On the day of the State Competition, my team debated to the best of our ability and knowledge against the five strong opponents. In addition, the threatening eyes of opponents and audience didn't make me feel nervous. I felt empowered. When the MC announced that the 1st place went to Vacaville High School, the happiness came straight from my eyes. Not only my team and I won the 1st place, but also I have won my confidence back in myself and no longer limit my
