Unit one essay for critical writing required me to brainstorm for the discourse communities I am a part of or would like to be a part of and write a personal narrative about two of them. I chose to write about my “joint Hindu family” and my education at Pace University. The term discourse community was relatively new to me. I understood the meaning of discourse communities only after my brainstorming sessions of reading, browsing and analyzing for this essay. It threw light on a relatively new term on which I was delving into for the first time. I learned a lot about my thought process, my manner of analysis, research and my writing procedure for this genre. I have been part of one of the communities I wrote about since birth and eased into the other last year at Pace University. I never had the opportunity to think and analyze how these communities played an important role in shaping me and my career. While reviewing my life for this essay, I appreciated the uniqueness of the vocabularies of my communities. My family raised me to be the strong and independent woman. My education in America has made me resourceful and has exposed me to a world of knowledge. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone. However, I was fortunate to have the support of my peers, faculty and fellow students to help me adapt quickly and efficiently. Discourse communities have had a place in the world since the beginning of time to enable people to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Discourse communities shape and bring about a sea of change among the members. Unique vocabulary specific to the community provides for easier and faster communication. Some discourse communities have their vocabulary closer to mainstream communication while others have fringe vocabulary which would make it impossible for people outside the community to understand their
