I had no expectations as to what I was going to learn throughout this experience. My goal was to learn how I can develop my own nonprofit agency to aid the people in my community. Although that is not completely out of the question, throughout this process, I have learned that there is a myriad of ways in which I can help in all three sectors.
I remember walking into my first class and the teacher basically saying we will read a bit of the class, “but what I really want you to do is DO it.” In all my courses, the sense that people learn to understand and appreciate the nonprofit sector best by doing was a common theme. Time and time again, we had to go back to analyzing real life scenarios and implementing what we would do in those situations. In PUA 701, I discovered exactly how the interaction between the three sectors plays out. The chosen writing documents an analysis of a public program that branches out to NGO’s (non-government organizations) which include the private and nonprofit sectors. In this olive branch, the nonprofit sector provides human service care and follow up to the juveniles arrested for prostitution as these are viewed as victims of sex crimes more so than offenders. The public entity has a specific job, to arrest offenders, but in these cases the definition of offender is blurred because the children are vulnerable and are usually forced into the life. The government organization is satisfying their mission in arresting the offenders, but allowing the nonprofit agencies to satisfy their missions in aiding these forced offenders to live long and healthy lives after this traumatic
