Devi Pusari (1998) described the importance of the 8 C’s for providing holistic care to a patient, these 8 C’s included compassion, confidence, commitment, competence, conscience, courage, culture and communication. Within the time I remained in the resus room observing the healthcare professionals working on Katie I witnessed them using these 8 C’s and providing the patient and the family with the best care possible. As I watched these aspects of care being provided I asked myself how I could get involved and participate in the holistic care of the patient and help in supporting the family. I found it very difficult and I felt as if I couldn’t do anything to help because I didn’t know exactly what was going on. As a student nurse I wouldn’t have expected myself to know what to do because I had never experienced something like this before. Therefore, I would like to focus and reflect on the aspect of feeling incompetent throughout the situation. To guide me with critically reflecting on my experience I will use John’s Model of Reflection (Johns, 2006).
