Relationships In Ayn Rand's Anthem

In the book, Anthem, by Ayn Rand, one of the main themes revolves around relationships. The relationship between Equality and the Golden One is very special because in their society they are not allowed to talk to the opposite gender, let alone look at one another, but they feel a connection so strong they try making it work. Equality knows how special the Golden One is and tries to forget about her, but he knows he can’t and needs her in his life. Throughout the course of the text, the theme of relationships has progressed and developed in many ways. When Equality runs away he realizes what he forgot and thinks that he can forget it. Equality remembers, “then a blow of pain struck us, our first and only. We thought of the Golden One. We thought of the Golden One whom we shall never see again,” (Rand 77). He thought that he would be able to move on, but then to find out the Golden One had been following him the whole time. Equality then realizes how grateful he is and doesn’t know what he would have done without her. In their society everyone is fearful of being different, which leads to no one really knowing what happiness feels like unless it has relation to their “brothers”. “There is no joy for men, save the joy shared with all their brothers. But the only things which taught us joy were the power we created in our wires and the Golden One. And both these joys belong to us alone, they come from us alone, they bear no relation to our brothers, and they do not concern our brothers in any way,” Equality stated (Rand 86). Equality was the first one to know what true happiness feels like, which is why this is so important. His relationship with the Golden One is so special to him, it brought him so much happiness and no one else will ever know what that feels like in his society. They love each other and no one can get in the way of their relationship. “We shall never leave this house,” we said. “Nor let it be taken from us. This is our home and the end of our journey. This is your house, Golden One, and ours, and it belongs to no other men whatever as far as the earth may stretch. We shall not share it with others,” which was said by Equality (Rand 91). In their society they are suppose to be equal and no one is suppose to have something that someone else doesn’t. Equality has broken multiple laws for this to happen, which shows how much he loves the Golden One. Now that they have a house they are ready to start a family and Equality knows how he will raise his child. He will raise him the right way so that his child will be their own individual and won’t have to be the same as everyone else. “Gaea is pregnant with my child. Our son will be raised as a man. He will be taught to say “I” and to bear the pride of it. He will be taught to walk straight and on his own feet. He will be taught reverence for his own spirit,” this was also said by Equality (Rand 100). Equality and the Golden One know how lucky they are that they are now on their own and can finally be their own individuals and raise their child how they want to raise it, not how the government wants to raise it.
