Dystrophin causes Muscular Dystrophy and associated dilated cardiomyopathy. (“DMD”, 2105) Associated dilated cardiomyopathy is when the heart does not have enough dystrophin. This then makes the heart work harder than it would have to and makes the muscles in the heart eventually die off. The disease it causes is Duchene and Becker Muscular Dystrophy. There are many different types of mutations of this disease about 1,000 of them. They both affect the male’s muscles and heart. (“DMD”, 2015) DMD symptoms normally start at a young age. They are first normally late walkers as babies, have enlarged calf muscles, have trouble walking and may even stumble as a child. The children are normally in a wheelchair from anytime from seven to twelve years old because their muscles are deteriorating since they have been born. They will have a hard time lifting their arms to turn off a light or even get a drink. Those simple things for us could be a hassle for someone with DMD. In 2007, fifteen out of every one hundred thousand males from ages 5-24 in the United States had DMD. (“Facts”, 2015) It is very rare for a woman to get DMD, but they do carry the gene of
