In Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks he talked about the difference that light and dark would make on the human eye. He noticed that human eyes would change in the sun verses the way they would look in the dark, their pupils would dilate, or contract. Since he did art work he wanted to get the pupils correct when he would do a picture so he did an experiment using a candle held above a person when they looked at a star, then slowly the candle was lowered while still watching the star to see what would happen. (I am assuming that he used someone else to do the experiment on, sorry if I am wrong but they were notes to himself so I don't know for sure.)
