The Wiz takes place on Saturday, February 10th at the Golden Gate Theater. After beginning their tour in Baltimore in late September, the musical cast still had a lot of passion and energy. Going to see The Wiz was a great experience with a lively crowd and a vibrant cast. The Wiz is a revival of the Broadway musical and influenced by The Wiz the movie (1987), responding to The Wizard of Oz. The Golden Gate Theater in downtown San Francisco is a large venue seating over 2000 people with balcony and orchestra seating. Before you reach the stage, a small section (“pit”) is blocked off for a small orchestra of about 15-20 people. They seem to be just dancers or extras when they should’ve had some character depth. The poppies were another group of side characters, but they sang in the song and had a calming sense to them that was wanted to be achieved. In the audience everyone was very lively, no performance went without loud applause, and no joke wasn’t laughed at. With every city that this show made a stop at, they brought in a local celebrity, for San Francisco it was Wayne Brady. When the local celebrity was announced, the crowd loved it, cheering with loud applause and whistling. At the end of the performance, when actors were being credited, everyone in the audience was standing up, clapping, and dancing to the music playing in the background. This performance was well thought out and an overall good experience, I didn’t expect as much as I received but I was not disappointed. The idea of having a show with all black people about black people is an impactful idea, including this part of the show from The Wiz, the movie was a strong
