I moved from the United States to the Dominican Republic at the age of thirteen with my parents. Living in the Dominican Republic as a young American came with many challenges. One of the biggest threats against foreigners was corruption and violence, and in that first year, I had an encounter that would forever change my life. Just one week before I was to start school, I was mugged by two assailants: one man on a motorcycle and another on foot. This day forever resounds in my memory because it was the first chance I had to go sightseeing becomes familiar with my new neighborhood.…
I chose the article “Declining Student Resilience: A Serious Problem for Colleges” because the article title sounded intriguing to me. Right away I wondered why student resilience was such a serious problem and how it became a problem for colleges. The title of this article made me curious and determined to find out why the author thought it was such a serious problem. Another reason that I chose to read this article was because in my other classes, I have already read articles related to the article “On Learning Difficult Things”. After skimming “On Learning Difficult Things”, it was very clear to me that I wanted to read about student resilience.…
Throughout college, I volunteered with at-risk teens in San Diego’s inner-city who needed guidance, tutoring, and companionship. This program exposed me to the heart of the city. Three weeks in a row, I watched an arrest be made at the doorstep of our building. The resilience and optimism displayed by the students despite these dire circumstances forever changed my perspective on the inner-cities. I mentored a teen battling gangs, poverty, and a brain tumor who never failed to dream of a better future for his entire community.…
Entering high school is a stressful moment for many students. Some start thinking about a college to go to, a career to pursue, and a way to be independent. It is a time for students to give it their all to prove to colleges that they are worth being accepted. Therefore, high school is not easy. Many students face obstacles which are often too much for them to handle.…
Resilient is a word that I would use to describe myself and I've learned over the years as a military brat to "adapt and overcome" new challenges and withstand trials. Starting in middle school I wasn’t always the type to adapt to my surrounding without what I was used to. As a military child it is hard to live in one place, make “best” friends, and then move. As I started to mature and get older, i realized that the people I called friends weren’t always going to be my friends. This is when I decided to do other activities to make more friends that could potentially be my social buddies.…
Before my Junior Year, I decided to get a gym membership, at Gold’s Gym. The gym was very large, with lots of red, yellow, and black colors, all over the place. The gym membership was a year-long contract. At the time, I believed that my junior year should be easy; considering I loaded up on core classes, during my sophomore year.…
While there are no major hardships or challenges I have faced personally, there is something a hardship that affected my entire family. When I was in the ninth grade, I found out that my twelve-year-old sister had been self-harming herself. Finding out my little sister was hurting herself was the most devastating news I had ever received. She started cutting around the time I started public school, so evidently I blamed myself. I couldn’t accept the fact that my sister turned to a blade before she turned to me.…
Growing up, I always struggled in school in one way or another. It wasn’t until high school it took a turn for the worse. I always thought middle school was as bad as it gets, but man was I wrong. Here I was, a normal teenage boy walking into a new environment. Although I can say that everyone has gone through some sort of stress or transition in their life, high school was totally a different transition for me.…
Last but not least, resilience is one of important factors that help students achieve a success in nursing school. For sure, I always know that nursing school is very tough, so I may face stress during the program. Thus, resilience may help me to moderate all the negative effects of stress. According to Beauvais, Beauvais, DeNisco, and Stewart (2013), “ faculty could consider fostering situations that provide the student with a sense of competence, with the opportunity to feel successful, and with the ability to cope with diverse problems or challenges” (p.922).…
Surviving High School High school seems like a different world compared to the easiness of the lower grades. Transitioning from middle school to high school is very different. The high school is gigantic, and filled with a lot of people. It is very easy to get lost.…
As I looked up some research about adolescent’s resilience and health I found out what it talked about on a physical level, also what resilience is. It was true for physical health, mental health encompasses more than it was true for physical health, mental health encompasses more than the absence of disorders. Researchers have considered a number of dimensions that have progress in mental health, which is “resilience.” Resilience has been defined as “the ability of an individual to function competently in the face of adversity or stress.” An adolescent who is resilient is likely to enter adulthood with a good chance of coping well—even if he or she has experienced difficult circumstances in life.…
One outcrop of the Social Cognitive Theory, associated with teaming, is the concept of resilience. Resilience is a person’s ability to adapt to stress and adversity. According to Anderson, Christenson, and Sinclair (2004), there has in recent years been an increase in the interest of fostering resilience of children. One of the findings of their report was that positive supportive relationships with adults is associated with resilience in children, and that the adult supporting the student need not be a parent. The implications for middle-level students are important, as many of these student’s relationships with school staff can be among the most influential and positive they experience.…
How can the struggles you face during your high school years make an impact in your life? Growing up is a part of life, but when you have to grow to be an adult your senior year that may be too soon. That was the case I had to face my 2010-2011 school year while attending McGavock High School. That year I learned how to become independent, mature and str To begin with, learning how to become Independent was a necessity at that point in my life.…
High school is never easy. There are a lot of changes and growing that people endure. I had a lot of hard times throughout high school. I had my fair shares of ups and downs just like everyone else. I was the type of student who stressed out of every single test, quiz, and project.…
My last year of high school was very difficult for me. During that year, I lost a lot of important people in my family and I fell into a slump. I had depression and had to miss many of my classes in order to help out my mother and father. I realized that I was very close to failing my classes and I realized I needed to get back on track.…
