(A discussion on the theme “life” in Spoon River Anthology) In the spoon river anthology Edgar Lee Masters writes poems about life including the poems: Lucinda Matlock, Cassius Hueffer and Richard Bone. Through the book the presence of the theme life is imminent. An example of a poem that illustrates life is Richard Bone. Tragedy struck when 8 of the 12 kids die and her life gets worn out by it. Most people can relate to a tragedy but hopefully not of this caliber. The feeling of losing 8 kids worn out on her and aged her but he kept on going strong. She says “Ere i had reached the age of sixty, I spun, I wove, I kept the house, I nursed the sick, I made the garden, and for holiday i rambled over the fields where sang the larks”.
Life was not gentle to her and she had to go through a lot. She kept on going and ended up as a old woman that had lived enough and died sleeping in. She says “At ninety-six I had lived enough ,that is all, and passed to a sweet repose”. She does not mention regret but rather a sign of relief. She ends life by saying “It takes life to love life”.
Cassius Hueffer is a person who life was hard on. He describes how people thinks his epitaph was a good description of how his life was a gentle life and that he was a man. He is angry towards his epitaph as it is not true and it gives a false description of how life was to him. Now that he is dead he cannot change his epitaph and is graven as a
