Conquering difficult tasks make us feel invincible, but even with this new found power it doesn’t mean we can escape the inevitable fate of death. In the story “Gilgamesh” by David Ferry, Gilgamesh, the main character goes into a devastated state after the loss of his best friend. He undergoes what seems to be a never ending journey to seek immortality. Gilgamesh is a dynamic character, who goes through multiple changes throughout the story, where he seeks of eternal life. Gilgamesh’s change teaches us that there will be many obstacles and our life that are inescapable, where we will try all means to annoyed them, but in the end we must accept our fate to help us evolve as a person. Gilgamesh continues his journey seeking answers for eternal life. Near the end of his journey he finds a man named Utnapishtim. Utnapishtim tells a story of his adventure how he obtained internal life to politely show Gilgamesh he was not worthy to receive such power. Gilgamesh being so headstrong, he wouldn’t take no for an answer. Utnapishtim who was aware of Gilgamesh is fate still revealed the secret of the Gods, where he could finally obtain infinite life. He feels that his quest has finally come to an end. As fate may have it, a snake stole and eat the plant. Once Gilgamesh found out he was devastated. Gilgamesh realizes that this whole time his fate was already set in stone. As much and as hard as he tried to overcome and conquer the reality of death, it was futile. Gilgamesh has learned the ultimate lesson that he too cannot escape death and also concluded he will never be able to be reconnected with his former companion. This is where Gilgamesh goes through the stage of compliance. He has completely accepted his fate and doesn’t attempt to get an another plant. He simply goes back to the kingdom to be a better
