To begin, In The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, supernatural thoughts can be misthought. But most of all, all the supernatural items came to be more of a superstition. In this case, after returning home, the mariner is safe but will live the rest of his life with a curse. “Prayer is no easy matter, because it involves a mastery of one's self, a conquering of one's own passions and willfulness.” (Barth) The curse one asks? His punishment will be that anytime he sees a person he has to tell them the story. “Farewell, farewell! But this I tell to thee, thou Wedding Guest!” (pg. 845, lines 610-611) This is what he has been suffering from. The Mariner will live with this curse because of the lack of respect he had given the albatross.
