Salem Massachusetts during the Witch Trials was not a place anyone would want to live. New witchcraft accusations came in everyday, with little to no evidence. Hangings and vicious back stabbing plagued the village. Throughout history we have seen time and time again how nasty humans can become when their life hangs in the balance. A large majority of African tribes are based on superstitions and myths. This has lead to an increase of many young women being labeled as witches to explain weird or unusual behavior. “Witch” has become such a common word in African vocabulary that it has taken a turn for the worst. Now, the word “witch” is being used to blame or accuse young women with little to no evidence. “An accusation of witchcraft often has little to do with sorcery—rather, it’s a way of settling scores. Many of the women in the camp tell stories of neighbors’ envy over sudden success.” (Grove). Camps set up all around Africa take refuge to those who have been ganged up on also known as mob mentality. Mob Mentality has consumed Africa and is used to push out rivals,competition or enemies within a tribe or community. The victims of mobs and their one way thinking force them to the labor camps of Central Africa, Most of those who enter the camp never leave. The camps are built on hard work. Women that live at the camps make money by either growing plants to sell, collect timber for fires or collect charcoal from nearby deposits. America was pitted in a tug-of-war match with Communist Russia and neither side wanted to lose. As the tidal wave of fear swept over America, being quick to judge was an everyday event. Many of the accusations were false, but the constant passing of blame and judging caused widespread anger and hate toward unsuspecting American citizens. In the 1940s the Red Scare had gone so far that everyone was affected disrupting daily life for many. “While a small number of the accused may have been aspiring revolutionaries, most others were the victims of false allegations or had done nothing more than exercise their democratic right to join a political party.” (Red Scare) American FBI agents questioned everything and everyone trying to find “communists”. People that were mainly prosecuted were those who had their named by coworkers,neighbors,family members or friends that claimed to see the accused commit acts against America and her people. The trials were not just or fair and the verdict was made biased and quick to judge FBI agents. On top of being accused and tried when an accused American came back to everyday life, they usually were alienated and stayed away from.
