Socialism is, in theory, where production, change and distribution is done by the community as a whole. While totalitarianism is an entirely government ruled country; the individual has no voice at all. Schlueter quotes from the article “The Road to Serfdom” by F.A. Hayek,“Socialism seeks to overcome the greed, waste, competitiveness, and inequality generated by the free market with central economic planning by administrative and regulatory ‘experts.’ But whoever controls the means of life, Hayek observed, necessarily controls the ends of life,” (Schlueter 4) this passage explains that socialism tends to overcome the hardships in the economy all coming from the free market. Also “Socialism” is the best moral answer for the reflection of the book “1984”. Furthermore, “whoever controls life, controls the ends of life” is a vague statement, there is no evidence; but it appears accurate. Overall, it seems that it doesn’t have a great standpoint in representing the idea that socialism is what makes America corrupt (considering the simple fact that America is not socialist, but capitalist.) In this case I disagree that 2017 is fully similar to “1984.” Especially in how Schlueter and Kakutani use Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to persuade the readers that Trumps administration is turning United States into a dis-utopia similar to the book, “1984.” Trump may be a totalitarian bigot, but he simply does not singularly have the power to create such a world.
