As was stated previously schools like Linden School District, and UC Merced have been affected by it. School violence should be looked into more than in the past. Children need to have a safe space, and a healthy environment to learn. So when they come to class they are not in fear of being picked on. Placing students in direct harm can cause a decreased number in student attendance. School violence appears in many forms from non-physical to physical aggression. Schools and communities need to consider both variables. Explaining violence prevention programs combined with individual risk factors and environmental are keys to tackle on. Social Work wants to improve the climate of schools. Making changes in the type, and level of involvement in peer groups. Targeting change in the social context appear to be more effective than those attempt to change individual attitudes skills, and risk behaviors. Children who witness violence and abuse, even if they are not the ones being abused can be affected by it. Causing P.T.S.D. (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). Even exposure to violence can affect a child’s ability to learn. Social Workers play a key role in the schools who provide counseling and support. The increase in depression, and low self-esteem Social Workers being there makes it pivotal in a child’s development.
