This semester has been a real struggle for me. I have been experiencing some negative vibes in my studies. The feeling of frustration, tiredness, no determination or zeal to study and participate in school work has had its toll on me. The combination of school, work and family has stretched me to my limits and getting towards the end of the programme should have been excitement for me but its laziness, sleepiness and tiredness. I had to learn the hard way by accepting the patient because the Dr. and the intern were in surgery. The Dr was informed about it but the patient got into the theatre, surgery was done and still consent wasn’t signed. I was held accountable even though surgeons were informed about the situation. I took it upon myself to never receive any patient whose consent form is not signed. There was also an incident when the hospital was sued because the patient never remembered the Drs Words during the interview. Thank God his signature on the surgical form saved the hospital a lawsuit and me from appearing in court. There has also been an instance where the patient is questioned upon being received and it has come to our attention that the patient has had breakfast. The Dr. is informed and the case is cancelled. The patient is also advised to remain NPO for their own protection during surgery. Being senior nurse on the shift sometimes comes with challenges and my leadership skill is sometimes tested. I had an incidence where I asked a junior nurse to replenish the theatre in case of an emergency. Comments were made and it was not done as instructed. An emergency came and theatre was not prepared. It all worked out eventually
