Nice Power Point Team C! Self-scheduling is mostly a positive for a nursing unit. People are more willing to keep the unit well-staffed if they have some say about the schedule. I hear nurses say they are more willing to pick up a phone call from a co-worker about needing help on a unit then the staffing office. Nurses have much better morale on a unit that they have some say about, then having someone dictate to them what is going to be done. It is proven that the nurse manager has more free time to do other duties, enhanced patient care is given when nurses are happy, nurses are more willing to help pick up extra time, if needed, and it leads to the empowering nursing staff and increasing their control to balance their personal and professional lives, particularly helpful to nurses who have children or part-time schooling (Lotte Bailyn, 2005) …show more content…
As far as holidays, we are assigned either holiday A or B at hire. If you work A this year, you will work B next year. Each holiday is split between the two categories with each having at least one major holiday like Christmas while the other had Thanksgiving. Many of our senior nurses do offer to switch and let the younger nurses with small children be off for Christmas. We have even split shifts to make it work for everyone on the holidays, so everyone has a chance to be at home with family and friends at some time during the holiday. Our weekends are every third so, they are already printed on the schedule. Vacations are based on seniority, and only 2 nurses from day shift and 2 nurses from night shift can be on vacation at the same
