Lennie understood that to be a good friend, he should let him know that he would leave if it was truly what George wanted. “‘No-look! I was jus’ foolin’, Lennie. ’Cause I want you to stay with me.’(13)” George realized that he had been a bad friend before when he was saying life would be easier without Lennie, so he made sure that Lennie understood that he didn’t mean what he had said before and that he did want him to be with him. Only a true friend would be willing to give up next to everything for the other. Lennie and George both express their selflessness throughout the story. That is only one reason why George and Lennie have a true friendship.
Second, is the quality or trait of defending and protecting each other. Not only do they protect each other physically, but also socially and mentally. George has protected or tried to protect Lennie from several things. One instance is the time in Weed. In Weed Lennie grabbed a girl's dress, because he wanted to feel it.
