"A work of literature must provide more than factual accuracy or vivid physical reality... it must tell us more than we already know. " - E. M. Forster. This means that the story must provide a little more then just facts and vivid physical reality. It must give more knowledge of what is already known and what is and must be achieved. I agree with the critical lens is valid because without the method of writing readers would be lost when they read about articles.…

Of Mice and Men is set outside the town of Soledad, California during The Great Depression, where two childhood friends make their way from the town of Weed to find work. Everywhere jobs are scarce and these men face many hardships on their journey. Throughout the story, Steinbeck hints that all will not end well; this creates a gloomy mood that winds its way to a dismal conclusion. In Of Mice and Men nearly every scene serves as foreshadowing for the inevitable tragic ending. In the first scene the reader learns that Lennie likes soft animals, but often kills them accidentally; this indicates that he may later kill again.…

In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Steinbeck shows us two different setting places to give us a better interpretation of how the story is moving along and the different characters. The first setting place is the pool that George and Lennie, two meager migrant workers, stumble along when they are trying to find another farm to work at. The author gives vivid descriptions of the location using words like, “Evening of a hot day, Little wind, Crisp sycamore leaves, Still, green pool” (2). These quotes are all related to good things, which means that the location they are in is very calming. In the next chapter, another place is introduced.…

Breaking down this quote into parts, the first conflict creates action then action creates a character. First, conflict creates action means when there is a conflict people will often take action to stop the conflict. An interpretation of action creates a character is how an action can shape a character, and how others would judge or think about the character. Conflict in a story is important because with out the conflict there would be no plot.…

The first paragraph is strictly a description of the physical setting of the farm, filled with descriptive devices that help to really seat the reader in the scene. Steinbeck does not simply use colors and physical shapes to describe the scene, he personifies the mountains as they "stood up against the sky. " He compared the farm buildings to aphids clinging to a plant in the way that they cling to the rocky, shallow soil. He also describes the shack and the barn as being "grey-bitten with sea salt" to give the setting some history and the feeling of being attacked and worn down by the weather and the power of nature over the years.…
