The importance of the Army Values within the United States Army. I will cover the seven values and their definition. Next, we will discuss where and when they became important to America’s Army. Lastly, we will discuss why, as leaders, it is important to live by these values both on and off duty. I hope to expand your knowledge on the topic and make you more aware as a leader. The seven Army values: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. We learn each of these when we begin Basic Combat Training. This does not only mean when others are around. The hardest part about this value is living it when no one is around to see. My number one value is integrity. This value should be your guiding light towards the rest of the values. Personal Courage; face fear, danger, or adversity (physical or moral). People like to think that this is something that they can do easily until they placed in a situation that test them. In my experience, I have noticed that having personal courage in the physical meaning is not as hard as having moral courage. It is hard for someone to speak up when knowing something is morally wrong. I believe that it is mostly from the fear of not fitting in. It in our nature to be a part of a group or family. We can see this issue on the news quite often. Sometime in 1995, the Army adopted the values for the first time. During its first few years, a push to make sure everyone went through training learned the values. In 2003, the war in Iraq began. This tested our leaders and Soldiers as wars do to one. In 2005, a second waive push the importance of our Army values. Leaders pushed these values down to the lowest level to ensure their Soldiers were upholding them. Leaders in our formations have been telling their Soldier to live by the Army values since the Army adopted them. Why is it that these Values are so important to live by as a leader? Being able to live by these seven values will make you a better person not just a leader. A leader who can hold these values close will be a leader of great caliber. They will be a leader who takes care of their Soldiers and themselves. They will be a leader everyone respects and admires. They are important to a leader because they are what a great leader should strive to become. Following the values off duty will not just make you a better person it will show the community what a Soldier is and give them something proud to call theirs.
