Plot.
The story starts in spring between an Italian nurse, Luz, and the American soldier, they fall and in love and the climax starts when the nurse refuses to go with him to America, it ends by Luz sinking into cheap relationship and the guy gonorrhea from a sales girl in the loop department. The story ends on summer "on a hot evening in Padua...", then the American soldier stays at the hospital for three months after this and Luz takes good care of him in her nightshift, "…Luz stayed on night duty for three months." Then after the armistice, Luz moves to Pordenone “…living in the muddy, rainy town in winter…” and ends the story with "The major did not marry her in the spring...” the time span of the story is about a year.

They are thrilled, confused and optimistic. In the beginning they were in the hot Padua, “One hot evening in Padua” shows the tension of their passionate love, they almost felt as if they were actually married to each other, but did not want anyone to know about it. As events float by, he decides to travel back to America, and their relationship cools down, “Living in the muddy, rainy time in winter”.
Narration.
The story is written in the 3rd person omniscient point of view “He and Luz could hear them below on the balcony”, the narrator comes across as being a male, “He thought of Luz in his bed”, he also comes to know the thoughts of the character.
Hemingway represents females in two ways, one as being beautiful, caring and friendly "They all liked Luz", secondly as dirty, heartless and useless "A short time after, he contracted gonorrhea from a sales girl in a loop department store while riding in a taxicab through Lincoln Park".
