Should States Ban Plastic Water Bottles?

Countries and cities everywhere are trying to ban the sale of plastic water bottles for many different reasons. Some reasons are for health environment and more, but is the ban worth it? I believe that states should start banning plastic water bottles.

My fisrt reason I think we should ban plastic water bottles, even though people are recycling, it isn’t enough for how much plastic water bottles we buy, The author, Katy Steinmetz wrote, “""[The bottles] are not being thrown away … They are being recycled." While that's not true of all bottles in the Bay Area, San Francisco is ahead of the average American city -- about 13% of plastics are recycled nationwide.” Scholastics article , Bottles, Be Gone also states, “About four out of every five

In the article, This Edible Water Blob Could Replace Plastic Water Bottles by Olivia B Waxman she says, “This blob-like container called Ooho! is made through a process called spherification, which shapes liquids into spheres. “The water is frozen as ice, making it possible to create a bigger sphere and keeping the ingredients in the membrane and out of the water." And it reportedly only costs two cents to make.” This product only cost two cents to make and it doesn’t need to be throw away, but this idea isn’t the only one. Glass water bottles are trying to be used in hotels, in the article Message in a Bottle by National Geographic Traveler states, “The idea is for every hotel to filter its own water in REUSABLE GLASS BOTTLES, sell it to guests, and donate 10 percent of the proceeds to support clean water projects," explains Sonu Shivdasani, co-founder of Whole World Water and chairman of Soneva Resorts. Benefits are far-reaching: no pollution; no toxins created from manufacturing plastic; and funds going to solve a problem plaguing the world's poor.” This is a great idea but some people may disagree about my argument. People might say that we need to keep water bottle for emergencies in an article by Scholastic states, “Some people argue that bottled water is important. Water is the healthiest drink, they point out, and people drink more water when it's easy to

The article “Goodbye, Bottled Water?”, by Gail Hennessey, was written to convince bottled water users to stop purchasing bottled water due to environmental impacts. To begin with, Hennessey pointed out such serious toxic pollution cause by throwaway plastic bottles. According to San Bernardino’s mayor, “ More than 1 billion plastic bottles end up in California's landfills each year.” Then, the plastic bottles will sit there for 1000 years to biodegrade and leaving toxic pollution. Likewise, Hennessey states that the oil needed for producing plastic bottles affect the environment as well.…

Isabel Johnson’s article “Bottled Water, Go Away” brings up a different perspective to an ongoing debate over the impacts of plastic water bottles on the world. She presents both the pros and cons of bottled water. Her reasons, however, do not provide a strong argument since she does not clearly support a single claim. Nonetheless, the reasoning behind her logic is supported using information obtained from research. Her credibility is built, but at the same time lost, from using these resources because they are not suitable to cite.…

She continues using logical reasons in her arguments that say that there are essential minerals in tap water that should encourage people to drink tap water. Proceeding to use logic, she makes clear that tap water also save money. This would encourage any college student to choose tap water over bottled water, since college students need all the extra money wherever they can find it. Moreover, following the same format of the rest of her article, Johnson then meets the preceding claims with a final claim that bottled water is essentially convenient to people. With this all being said, a point about reusable water bottles is finally brought to the table and is said that using reusable water bottles is the ultimate…

The EPA does not live up to their standards of protecting people from dangerous substances by allowing plastic bottled water industries to thrive off producing more plastic water bottled products. First, plastic water bottled products are dangerous to both human and oceanic life because of the health problems it presents when being made. Also, plastic from the plastic water bottles are made from oil that has cancer-causing agents known as benzenes. In addition, the factories that produce them, the biggest being Flint Hills, poison the air, ground water, and soil surrounding them. This makes me wary of the EPA and how they could not investigate the plastic producing factories due to not receiving enough complaints from the people and the higher…

    Bottled Water Norms

The descriptive social norm on campus about bottled water is to carry one with you and to dispose of it in the correct bin. For example, when I go visit my sister to the U of A campus, I observed that students placed their trash in the correct bin, so I placed my bottled water in the correct bin. This descriptive behavior communicates that recycling and separating items is a social approved behavior, hence it is also socially acceptable to use them. To help change students’ behavior I would first do some Community Based Social Marketing (Koger & Winter, 2002, p. 114). I would let my community leaders know how promoting reusable water bottles on campus would not only be environmentally good, but if they give bottles to students it would…

On average, thirsty customers in the U.S. throw away sixty million water bottles a day, and for every five water bottles consumed, one is recycled. The length of time for plastic water bottles to decompose is between four hundred and one thousand years. People may choose to drink bottled water over tap water with the misconception that it is the cleaner, tastier, or even a healthier choice. The rate at which people are consuming bottled water is causing landfills to be filled with approximately seventy-five percent of the plastic water bottles that are made. While bottled water sales increase, the consumption of tap water is the most advantageous choice for health benefits, environment conservation, and affordability as a choice for the consumer.…

According to United Nations Environment Programme, there is approximately 46,000 pieces of plastic floating in every square mile of the ocean! I strongly think that plastic bags should be banned in the whole entire United States. Not only would it encourage people to use reusable bags, it will save many animals, and will prevent toxins from entering into the air. First of all, with a ban on plastic bags, it will encourage people to use reusable bags. Reusable bags have a benefit on not only you, but also the environment around us.…

How much do you think animals, like birds, enjoy eating part of a plastic bottle that was left around, and then choking to death? They probably don’t like it too much. Scientists have found pieces of plastic bottles and bottle caps inside of dead bird remains, and inside of pellets. We even do it to other humans (not the choking on plastic part) we litter in schools, work places, streets, all over the place. If you look along a road for a couple miles, I guarantee you’ll find some plastic water bottles because people just don’t clean up after themselves.…

Plastic is a new foundation for human life: food comes packaged in plastic, sports are played on grass made out of plastic, supplies are wrapped in plastic, and accessories are encased in plastic. Plastic also has a way of getting into trees, bushes, oceans, animals, and makes the environment look awful. As of watching our backyards and oceans get filled with plastic bags, we have realized the trouble plastic causes for the environment. San Francisco, California, Laredo, and Eagle Pass have banned plastic bags, should the whole United States ban plastic bags in order to keep the environment safe and green?…

Disposable plastic is so popular because it is so convenient to throw away after consumption. However, there are too many externalities. Although they are convenient, I have become much more conscious about using plastic in the past few years because of the negative effects it has on the environment. This has become a global issue; plastics have become such a staple in human lives that we are having trouble cutting back on its consumption. Plastics have spoiled us with convenience and ease that it is actually troublesome to stop using them.…
