In the book and the movie there are both similarities and differences as there are in most things. One of these differences between the book and the movie happens to be the assignments Asher and Fiona receive. In the book, Asher is assigned as Assistant Director of Recreation and Fiona as Caretaker of the Old. However, in the movie, Asher was assigned as Drone Pilot. Fiona received the assignment of Nurturer. Not only were their assignments different but where they volunteered was different as well. In the book, it mentions Asher, Fiona and Jonas all volunteering together at the House of the Old. Although in the movie it showed the three of them volunteering at the Nurturing Center. These differences were small but still made an impact.

One of the many similarities is release. Whether it’s a newchild, man or woman being released from the house of the old or a delinquent it’s all the same. They die through lethal injection but the community does not know what death is hence the word release. You can also request to be released. There was an example of this in the book and movie when Rosemary, the last Receiver of Memory before Jonas, couldn’t handle the emotional pain of the memories. When she was released all of the memories that she had accumulated over the 5 weeks of her training had gone back to the community. This had a big impact on the community and they were extra careful when they chose Jonas to be the next Receiver of
