Have you recognized that our Canadian culture is slipping away? Is Canada too close with America for comfort? As an immigrant, it is obvious that Canadian culture is very similar to American culture. The influences from the United States are incredible; Canadians watch American TV programs, listen to American pop music and buy American products. Being close with America, not only occur cultural influences, but also need to face a sometimes unfriendly neighbor. The United States changed their attitude to Canada on occasion. For instance, in 1920s, Canada only has 50 KW radio station power output, nevertheless, US has 6800 KW (Leskun 15). This statistic showed that an enormous number of Canadians listened to American radio while there was only the minority of Americans listened Canadian’s. It was readily reachable to American electronic media by TV. In 1982, only 4% of TV plays that played on television were Canadian (Getis 390). More American TV programs would make Canadians have a greater chanced to watch. However, TV shows from other countries can influence one country’s culture and change the minds in that country to be more like other countries. In the same year, if you have a vacation to both Ontario and Michigan, you would these two provinces are basically same (Getis 389). Not only the landscapes, but also the commercial chains and advertisements are same (Getis 389). This is an excellent example of the Americanization of Canadian culture. "America appeared to be source of all good things, things that were magical and ingenious and fun -- Cokes, thirteen-inch hot dogs, sodas and milkshakes, soft ice cream, chocolate bars, Walt Disney’s lovable world full of cute characters, comic books, Hollywood movies," remembered McCracken (“Cultural Invasion”). These things are the significances of American cultural invasion. The reason of these things could easily invade Canada is Canada and America is close and they have North American Free Trade
