Similarities Between Night And A Separate Peace

The novel A Separate Peace, written by John Kowles, follows the story of a high school student of Gene Forester. It begins as Gene is revisiting his old high school after graduating and he visits key spots in his life and tells his story along with the tragedies. He was attending Devon’s high school during the start of World War II. As he tells his story he coves over three major themes. The novel occurs in the same time as another novel, Night, which follows the story of a Jewish teenager. The overall setting and story are drastically different for being during the same time. The Story unfolds as Gene comes across events in his life which are related to the themes of the story. The novel covers over a few major themes, and the first is Envy. The theme of envy occurs throughout the entire novel as it affects different people. In the beginning Gene attends high school, and he rooms with his good friend Phineas, Finny for short. However they two novels are drastically different. In the beginning of both however, no one expected the war to be a problem. This stayed throughout A Separate Peace as the boys often joked about the war. In Night the war became very real as it told of how the people were taken to the concentration camps. This cause loss for those teens to become a normal thing, even possibly to the point they expected death. A Separate Peace is greatly different the fact that the largest loss to most boys was when their maids stopped serving them. That was the extent of those teens suffering. Brinker even wrote a poem about the war, “The war is a bore.” This is exponentially different for the characters of Night. The teens from night had to fight for their lives and suffered unbelievable pains. Every day was a struggle to live. The two novels are different but I can relate my life to A Separate peace more so than
