Similarities Between Slavery And The Making Of America

Have you ever wanted to learn about slavery that occurred in America? There are many ways you could do that. One way is that you could read books about this topic such as To Be a Slave by Julius Lester. I have also read the book titled Slavery and The Making of America by James Oliver Horton and Lois E. Horton. I discovered many similarities as well as differences in the book. The first similarity I found was that both books included information about former President of the United States of America, Thomas Jefferson. In To Be a Slave, Lester provided information about that he believed the slaves or African Americans were inferior to the Caucasian race. In Slavery and The Making of America, the book also provided the thoughts Jefferson had about slavery. The next similarity I found was that both books provided information about slave rebellions. In To Be a Slave, the rebellion that was mentioned was Nat Turner’s rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia in 1831. This rebellion was also mentioned in Slavery and Making of America. The first difference in these two book I found was To Be a Slave provides more accounts of slaves than it does in Slavery and the Making of America. In the other book, there are still slave accounts as well as others, but the majority of the book is not made up of these accounts. The second difference I found was that the book included more examples of slave rebellions such as the Stono Rebellion in South Carolina and the Amistead rebellion aboard the ship. The next difference I found was that the authors of Slavery and The Making of America, included more information about Thomas Jefferson by that in the first draft of the historic document, The Declaration of Independence, Jefferson originally wrote a section that blamed Britain for introducing slavery to the United States of America. The section was eventually removed in the final draft because his other slaveholders forced him
