Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem, is Equality 7-2521’s journal, which he says is a sin. In this journal he is writing down all his emotions, questions and thoughts. Equality 7-2521 lives in a society where reading, writing, thinking, questioning, knowledge and being different is a sin.
The journal starts with the sentence “It is a sin to write this” (Rand 1).
Though he knows that everything he does is a sin he keeps on doing them, he is a rebel.
He is questioning the way the government rules and is writing down his thoughts about his “invention” of the light bulb. He breaks the rules many times and writes it down in his journal, which makes Equality 7-2521 think, that this journal is a sin. A sin towards the government.

He is not scared of the world council, or that they might find them. He develops a new ethos with new values. He does not think that questioning, reading, writing, emotions, being different or an individual is a sin. It seems that he is living in a totally new world. He started his journey in a forbidden small tunnel, thinking that everything he does is a sin. In the end, he is in the forbidden forest, where he starts to recognize that not everything he does or did is a sin. It is a place where he feels free and can handle his life however he wants. In the beginning of his journal he was totally alone, but now he starts to develop a family and emotions to the Golden One. Equality 7-2521 changed a lot during his journey and became another person, he has another perspective towards things and does not care about others anymore. He starts to think about himself, his family and how to handle his live. He became an individual, which probably was the biggest sin in the society he lived him. One of the greatest discoveries he made was his Ego, which he also makes clear with: “The sacred word: EGO” (Rand 105). This is how his journal ends. Equality 7-2521 started the journal saying that it is a sin to write a journal and ends it with the greatest sin of the society:
